Medical Treatments

Traditional Or Alternative Medicines, Or Both?

Infertility rates are slowly, but surely on the rise in both females and males with increasing numbers of couples failing to fall pregnant. This is thought to be due to a number of interlinked dietary, lifestyle and biological reasons. There are a number of fertility treatments available for couples from mainstream medicines to more alternative or Chinese medicines. Mainstream medicine offers only pretty invasive and uncomfortable procedures. There are tablets and injections available that are designed to boost fertility in women but also have pretty nasty side effects. Both treatments cite mood swings, hot flushes, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness, digestive upsets, bloating and headaches as potential side effects. Other fertility treatments tend to be invasive, time consuming and expensive, but they do produce positive results in a number of cases. An IUI, where the partner’s sperm is injected into the uterus through a catheter has success in around about fifteen per cent of cases. In this treatment the sperm sample is examined so the best sperm may be extracted for injection. It can be costly and not guaranteed to work the first time, which means multiple visits may be required. As well as this women will experience a number of days of discomfort after the procedure.

Other fertility treatments include IVF or Donor insemination. IVF is a method by which an egg is extracted and fertilised outside of body in a lab. Once the egg is fertilised, the embryo is then reinserted into the uterus. Again, it can be expensive and not particularly pleasant, emotionally or physically. Donor insemination is where an egg or sperm is taken from donor individual and artificially insemination and then placed within the uterus. This means that the foetus will not share the DNA of both parents, which can be pretty heartbreaking. It also means that a donor must be found which can be difficult and or expensive.

Other alternative methods such as Chinese herbal medicine in Melbourne or herbal remedies are sometimes used in conjunction with (or, instead of) mainstream treatments. Acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular both men and women looking to increase fertility. By placing numbers of needles in pressure point around the body, a healthy blood flow is promoted. It can also help with the lining of the uterus or quality of sperm or eggs. There is also scientific evidence to support this (although limited) as a treatment for fertility issues. Treatments such as mediation, yoga and hypnosis are also considered beneficial alternative treatments for fertility. All of these practices help reduce stress which is a major cause of infertility in both men and women.

At this stage most of the alternative or Chinese medicines for fertility treatments are advised by doctors to be used in conjunction with traditional methods. Things like yoga, hypnosis and meditation have very little to no scientific evidence that they improve fertility. But, many couples swear by it. Doctors generally suggest to do what you feel works you and effectively reduces stress. To get best treatment of acupuncture in Melbourne, visit this website.
